Marafiki:
Lies, damn lies!
That's right friends. The Ugandan AIDS miracle is a pile of BS as
this letter to the editor published in the Daily Nation, Kenya's largest
newspaper, says.
If a cure and a way to control the spread of AIDS is to be found we
must get serious with the numbers. The Western world, including the
Bush administration and Vatican, know the Uganda stats are all baloney,
but they continue to misuse the bogus numbers.
Why do I care? I'm lucky to be alive and feel a little guilty that
I'm breathing today. That's the honest truth. Lots of friends and
the most intelligent and gifted people I ever knew are all gone, wiped
out, perished, dead, partly because like I they relied on government
stats and all the church gibberish about the deadly pandemic.
It's a sad thing when you have to think and dream about departed comrades
a couple of months after you've just turned 38 in a country where
life expectancy is more than 70 years old.
All the talk about abstinence and Uganda's "success stories," if you
can't abstain, like most humans, have fun, but remember to practice
safe sex. That means reliable plain rubber and a couple of AIDS tests
if things are getting serious. I think Franco Luanzo Luambo Makiadi
and TP Ok Jazz's 16-minute "Attention Na Sida" should be enough catalyst
if you have doubts.
